Intro: My Journey

Before I ever wrote a word about who is driving your life, I had to answer that question for myself.

For years I was sure I knew where I was going. I had my plans, my dreams and my own idea of what the right road looked like. I made my own decisions, chose my own direction and steered my life the way I believed it should go. From where I sat, everything looked fine. I thought I was on the right path.

Then, in 2010, I gave my life to Jesus Christ β€” and everything changed.

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

β€” Proverbs 14:12 (KJV)

A Total Turnaround

When I gave my life to Christ, it was not a small adjustment or a slight change of lanes. There was a shift in the whole direction my life was going. It was a total turnaround. The path I had been so sure of turned out, in God’s eyes, to be the wrong way. What had seemed right to me was not right to Him.

Nothing was left untouched. My dreams changed; the things I once longed for gave way to what God desired for me. My friendships changed. Even my relationships changed. And as I look back, I can see why. It was all because somebody else now had the wheel of my life.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

β€” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

Less Stress, More Rest

Here is what surprised me most about moving out of the driver’s seat: life became less stressful. I no longer had to carry the weight of working everything out on my own. I did not have to see the whole road, plan every turn or fix every problem before it arrived.

All I had to do was learn to trust Him β€” more and more, day by day β€” and enjoy His rest. That learning has not stopped. Every season has taught me to let go a little more and to lean a little more deeply on the One who is driving.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

β€” Matthew 11:28 (KJV)

When the Business Crumbled

In 2013 I married the love of my life, Gina. At that time I was into business, and like many young husbands, I thought I knew how our future would unfold.

Then, by the grace of God, our second child, Jeriel, was born β€” and around that same time, my business crumbled.

Humanly speaking, it should have been a season of fear. Yet Gina and I noticed something strange. Though business was down, we lacked nothing. The Lord sent destiny helpers our way. Our bills were paid, sometimes in ways we could only call miraculous. We borrowed nothing, and we lacked nothing.

I would go out to my business even when it was empty, and still I would come back home with enough to take care of our needs. We were not in control of our provision β€” but the One who was driving never let us run out of fuel.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

β€” Philippians 4:19 (KJV)

Further Than We Ever Imagined

God was not only providing; He was leading us somewhere. Just after Gina gave birth to our third child, Ailsa, she went back to school to complete her master’s degree.

When she graduated, she told me she would sit the entrance examination into ENAM, the biggest professional institution in our nation. Miraculously, she passed. Today she is a magistrate at the Supreme Court, the highest jurisdiction in our nation.

When I think back on those years, I am reminded that we could never have planned that road. When the business fell apart, it looked as though our journey had stalled. But the Driver was taking us somewhere we had never thought of or imagined.

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.

β€” Ephesians 3:20 (KJV)

When you make God your Driver, He will lead you to where you have never thought or imagined.

Called to Serve

In 2018, some eight years after I gave my life to Him, the Lord called me into ministry. I knew I could not answer that call on my own understanding, so I went to Bible college (seminary) to study and prepare.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

β€” 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

Three years later, I was ordained into ministry. From that day I was transformed into another person. My eyes were opened, and I can truly say that something entered me for service. I started off as an assistant pastor, and went on to enrol in other ministry training programmes. Little did I know that all along, God was preparing me.

And what He began in me did not stop with me. These same ministry gifts are now manifesting strongly in the lives of my children. Our first child, Mildred, is strongly anointed as a praise and worship minister β€” in fact, she is the praise and worship leader of our church.

Why I Wrote This Book

That is why I have written The Driver. I know what it is like to hold the wheel tightly, convinced I am heading the right way. And I know the peace that comes from letting go and allowing God to take control.

Wherever you are on your journey β€” whether you have just begun following Christ or have walked with Him for many years β€” my prayer is that these pages will help you move over to the passenger seat, trust the Driver you cannot see, and enjoy the ride.

So let us begin with the question that changed my life: Who is behind the wheel?

When you let the cross go before you, the world and all its problems stay behind. Jesus is Lord.

Chapter 1: Who’s Behind the Wheel?

Every journey has a driver. Someone decides when to leave, which road to take, when to slow down and when to press on. Your life is no different. Every morning you pull out into traffic of one kind or another β€” a job, a family, a decision, a worry β€” and someone is steering. The only question is who.

Most of us would answer quickly: “I am, of course.” We chose our schools, our careers, our friends, our homes. We set the alarm and we plan the week. And yet, if we are honest, many of us are exhausted from driving. We grip the wheel through every storm, check every mirror twice, and still arrive at places we never meant to go.

A Question Worth Asking

Scripture does not begin by asking whether you are a good driver. It asks whether you are the right one.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

β€” Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

Notice the promise at the end: he shall direct thy paths. The word pictures a road made straight and level, a way opened ahead of the traveller. God is not offering to be a passenger who gives occasional advice. He is offering to take the wheel.

Why We Hold On

We hold the wheel because we are afraid of what might happen if we let go. We have been hurt before. We have trusted people who failed us. Somewhere along the road we decided that the only safe driver is the one we can see in the mirror.

But leaning on our own understanding is like driving at night with the headlights off because we think we know the road. We may know it better than a stranger does, but we cannot see what is around the next bend. God can.

The Invitation

This book is an invitation to ask a simple question and to answer it honestly: who is really driving my life? Not who should be. Not who I tell people is. Who actually decides where I go, what I pursue, and what I do when I am afraid?

The good news is that the Driver who offers to take the wheel has never lost a passenger He was asked to carry. He knows the road because He made it. He knows the destination because He prepared it. And He knows you β€” every fear, every hope, every wrong turn β€” and He still offers to drive.

Signs of Who Is Driving

How can you tell who is really behind the wheel? Look at what happens when life does not go your way. If every setback leaves you anxious, angry or sleepless, it may be because you believe everything depends on you. Look at how you make decisions. Do you pray first, or only after you have already chosen? Look at what you do with your fears. Do you bring them to God, or do you try to solve them all by yourself before you ever mention them to Him?

None of these signs are meant to condemn you. They are simply dashboard lights, warning you that someone other than God has taken the driver’s seat. The first step toward a different journey is noticing where you are sitting. You cannot hand over a wheel you do not realise you are holding.

Who has been driving your life lately β€” you, your fears, other people’s expectations, or God?

In what area of your life are you gripping the wheel the tightest right now?

What would it look like this week to “acknowledge Him” in that area before you decide?

Lord, I have been driving my own life for a long time, and I am tired. Teach me to trust You with all my heart and to stop leaning on my own understanding. Take the wheel, and direct my paths. Amen.
