4 min read Discerning God’s Will in a Relationship Without Waiting for a Neon Sign

By Pastor Mega Philip Mega, author of Dating on Purpose.

β€œI just want God to make it obvious.” It is one of the most common prayers in Christian dating, and one of the most quietly agonising, because for most people, in most decisions, God does not make it obvious. There is no dream, no verse that leaps off the page at exactly the right moment, no unmistakable inner voice that settles the matter. Waiting for a neon sign that never comes leaves a lot of sincere people stuck, mistaking the absence of a miracle for the absence of guidance.

The pattern Scripture actually offers

β€œTrust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV)

This is not a promise of audible instructions. It is a promise about direction over time, given to those who genuinely submit their decisions to God rather than merely asking Him to rubber-stamp what they had already chosen. The ordinary biblical pattern for discernment is wisdom, not mysticism: Scripture’s clear commands, honest counsel from mature believers, sober self-examination, and a settled peace that comes after the actual work of thinking clearly, not instead of it.

What discernment actually looks like

  1. Start with what Scripture has already settled. Is this person a genuine believer, walking with real integrity? That is not a question needing special revelation. It is already answered.
  2. Move to counsel. What do the wise people in your life, who know you both, actually observe?
  3. Examine your own motives. Are you moving toward this out of genuine conviction, or out of fear, loneliness or pressure?
  4. Let peace arrive last. A settled confidence that follows honest work, not a feeling you chase in place of it.

When the decision still is not clear

Sometimes, even after real wisdom, real counsel and real self-examination, a decision remains genuinely unclear: two good options, no obvious wrong answer. That is not a failure of your discernment, and it is not a sign God has gone silent. In matters where Scripture does not specify and wise counsel does not clearly point one direction, you are often free to choose, trusting that God’s providence works through a wise decision as surely as through a dramatic one.

The neon sign was never the normal way God leads His people. Faithful process is.

Common traps

  • Waiting for a sign in a decision Scripture has already addressed. If the question is whether to date someone who does not share your faith, the Bible has already spoken.
  • Chasing a feeling of peace instead of doing the work. Peace is meant to follow the process, not replace it.
  • Asking for counsel only from people who will agree. Include at least one person who will tell you the truth.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Have you been waiting for an unmistakable sign in a decision Scripture and wise counsel have already addressed?
  • Who are the wise counsellors you would actually trust to speak honestly into this decision, and have you asked them?
  • Where might you be chasing a feeling of peace instead of doing the honest work that peace is meant to follow?

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a relationship is God’s will?

Not through a single sign but through a process: what Scripture has already settled, the counsel of wise believers who know you both, honest examination of your motives, and a settled peace that follows that work.

Does God speak through feelings?

He can give peace, but a feeling alone is a poor guide. Peace belongs at the end of the process, after wisdom and counsel, not at the beginning.

What if I still cannot decide?

If Scripture does not specify and wise counsel does not point clearly in one direction, you are often free to choose. God works through wise decisions as surely as through dramatic ones.
